DIY Shaving Cream

Before we jump into the recipe though, let’s cover some of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to both store bought shaving cream and DIY shaving cream.

Do You Need Shaving Cream

Do you need shaving cream, or not?

It’s a common debate, and one that many people feel strongly about on both sides.

That being said, experts have weighed in on this topic and determined that you absolutely should be using shaving cream anytime you shave — and for good reason.

According to Well + Good, “The purpose of a shaving cream is to act as a buffer between a razor and your skin.”

Scientists also say that the hydration and lubrication that comes from shaving cream is essential in making shaving more friendly for your skin.

Instead of forcibly extracting the hair follicle, shaving cream helps to soften the blow and help avoid skin issues like razor burn, ingrown hairs, cuts, and more.

And if you’re someone that’s reading this thinking your body wash or conditioner does a good enough job on it’s own without adding another product into your routine, guess again.

Most products that aren’t specifically designed for shaving are too slippery and do not provide enough moisture, which can ultimately lead to dry skin and irritation.

Don’t worry though — our DIY shaving cream recipe is ultra hydrating, meaning you can pretty much kiss razor burn and other skin issues goodbye!

Is Shaving Cream Toxic

If you’re wondering is shaving cream toxic, unfortunately the answer isn’t as cut and dry as you might have hoped.

According to poison control, commercial shaving creams aren’t toxic when ingested in small amounts.

That being said, that doesn’t mean that store bought shaving cream includes only super friendly ingredients that you should feel great about putting on your skin time after time.

After all, our skin is our body’s largest organ, so it’s pretty important how we treat it!

Some of the questionable ingredients you can find in commercial shaving cream include things like parabens, propolene glycol, triethanolamine (according to this article many formulas containing TEA are found to be contaminated with nitrosamines, which are linked to cancer), and more.

Not to mention, most all commercial products contain trade secret “fragrance”, which companies can conveniently use to mask any ingredients they’d rather not put on the label.

So while store bought shaving cream isn’t necessarily the most toxic thing in your home, you can definitely improve it by making your own homemade shaving cream instead.

How to Apply Shaving Cream

When it comes to this homemade shaving cream recipe, application is pretty simple.

The key is to apply the DIY shaving cream with clean, dry hands.

You can also use a scoop like these Hearth & Hand ones to get the shaving cream out of your container and onto wet hands if you prefer, but the key is to not allow the leftover shaving cream to collect water (which could potentially lead to bacteria growth).

Another way you can apply this shaving cream is by putting it in an empty body wash container and squeezing it out.

I like the look of these 16 0z glass jars and the fact that they’re airtight, but a soap dispenser should work adequately as well and also prevent you from getting moisture into the leftover product.

How to Make Shaving Cream

Making DIY shaving cream is surprisingly simple.

There are tons of different recipes out there on the internet, but what I love about this one is that it’s the perfect balance between oils and other ingredients.

You’ll see a common recipe floating around the web which just includes mixing three different oils together (or two oils and some shea butter) for a quick homemade shaving cream recipe, but I find that DIY beauty products that rely on so much oil tend to be too greasy.

While this DIY shaving cream recipe has a few more ingredients than some other recipes, it’s definitely worth it to get the right consistency.

Oh, and did I mention there’s only a few quick steps in this whole project?

How to Make Homemade Shaving Cream

Step One: Combine Your Oils & Shea Butter

This recipe starts out similarly to many other DIY shaving cream tutorials.

Combine your coconut oil, shea butter, and grape seed oil in a medium pot over low heat, stirring occasionally until completely melted (see the recipe at the end of post for measurements).

You can substitute out the grape seed oil for another oil of your choice if you prefer, like avocado oil or olive oil.

For me, I just used what I already had in my kitchen!

Step Two: Let the Mixture Harden

I debated on how to title this article, since technically you can’t have it ready minutes.

That being said, you really only have to actively work on this recipe for about 10-15 minutes total.

The biggest time suck is waiting for the shea butter and oil mixture to harden in the fridge.

Honestly though, I put my mixture in the fridge and let it set while I left the house and did some other things I needed to get done that day.

So really, waiting a few hours for the mixture to harden isn’t that big of a deal.

Step Three: Combine and Whip Hardened Shea Butter & Oil Mixture with Baking Soda and Castile Soap

Step three of this recipe is by far my favorite!

It’s so fun seeing the mixture start to resemble a fluffy, frosting-like cream.

Honestly, it looks so good once you’re done whipping it that it could even pass for homemade frosting!

Step Four: Transfer to Container & Enjoy!

Last but not least, transfer the freshly whipped DIY shaving cream into your container of choice and store for use.

This homemade shaving cream should keep for several months, as long as you avoid getting any water into it while showering.

Thankfully it doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge, either.

Just store it somewhere that’s cool and dry (like a normal bathroom probably should be), and you’re ready to rock.

Disclaimer: Before you try any skincare product, store bought or homemade, I ALWAYS recommend doing a patch text on a small section of your skin to make sure you don’t have a reaction (because having a reaction is always a risk you take with new skincare products!). You should also discontinue use of any of the DIY beauty recipes on this site if you experience any redness, irritation, etc.
