Thank you to adidas for sponsoring today’s post on autumn outfits, featuring all my best tips on layering! As always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Every summer season, I swear time somehow magically speeds up. It’s like someone sitting on the remote during your favorite movie of all time and accidentally pressing fast forward.
That being said, I do welcome the fall season with open arms. Halloween movies, pumpkin spice, fall candles…I want it all.
And did I mention cozy autumn outfits? Layering is the key to mastering fall fashion here on the east coast, which is why we’re talking about five of my top tips on layering in today’s post.
Believe it or not layering doesn’t have to be clunky, or unflattering though. Check out the few simple tips below, and you’ll be well on your way to mastering all of your autumn outfits this season!
5 Layering Rules You Need to Follow This Fall
1. Size Up
One of the biggest things to remember when shopping for fall clothing is the idea of sizing up on certain pieces. If you’re planning on layering, you of course want to make sure there’s enough room to fit some warmer items under your outerwear comfortably.
I absolutely love adidas sweatshirts in particular for fall, because many of them are already oversized! It makes adding pieces underneath for extra warmth such a breeze.
2. Choose the Right Fabric
There’s nothing worse than having to spend the day in scratchy, uncomfortable clothing. I find comfort to be even more important when layering, since you’ll be stacking pieces on top of one another.
Brands like adidas are great for layering, because many of the pieces are stretchy and perfect for pulling over each other.
3. Don’t Overdo It
Even though it can get pretty chilly here in New York during the fall, you never want to overdo it when it comes to layers. Choose lighter, stackable options such as a tighter long sleeve combined with a sweatshirt or vest, rather than bulkier sweaters, coats, etc., all piled together.
4. Make it Easy
Again, layering is easy when you have the right base pieces! I like to work with lots of neutrals during the fall, as well as lighter fabrics that can be layered without getting too hot.
5. Color Coordinate
It may sound obvious, but you of course want to color coordinate when choosing layers. There’s nothing worse than going to pull off your top layer and realizing the shirt you’re wearing underneath doesn’t match the rest of your look. Try things on individually to make sure they go together before putting the whole look on.
