Office Decor

When we moved into our new (and first) home about a month ago, I didn’t have a clue what being a homeowner entailed. In truth, I still don’t! There’s been many times over the course of the past few weeks where I’ve caught myself wondering, “We are doing this right, aren’t we?”

That being said, we’re constantly learning. It’s going to take awhile for things to totally come together in the way I imagine, but we’ve been tackling small projects each weekend and making the place our own bit by bit.

This past weekend was especially exciting, because we finally got to work on my home office! I’ve never had my own office before, but it’s become quite the necessity thanks to this blog and some of the opportunities that have come with it over the past four years.

While the home office is still a work in progress (just like the rest of the house), we made some big strides with my office decor and deskspace this weekend. The best part though? We did it all on an extremely limited amount of time.

Check out some of my best office decor tips below to find out how we managed + how you can, too!

Office Decor: 5 Steps to a Beautiful Home Office

Take Your Time

I’ve found that the first step to finding amazing office decor is (shockingly) to just sit back and relax. My home office sat dormant for the first month after we moved in. It frustrated me at first, because I thought things would come together much faster.

The truth is however, this period gave me time to think about what I actually wanted. Decorating your home office isn’t just about creating a beautiful space, it’s about designing a room where you can truly be productive.

Think about your habits and what types of environments you work best in. Call me crazy, but I even chose my paint colors based on how they made me feel and if I thought they’d help me get inspired!

Find Inspiration

One thing that was incredibly important to me when designing my deskspace was that it both reflected my personal style and motivated me in some way. I chose to create a DIY gallery wall as a part of my office decor, making sure to include images and quotes that really resonated with me.

Make it Easy

If you’re planning to do a gallery or photo wall in your home office, one of my top tips is of course to make it as easy as possible. For the longest time I was off put by the idea of a gallery wall, just because I didn’t want to have to put holes in the wall.

This time around though, things were super simple thanks to VELCRO® Brand HANGables® Removable Wall Fasteners. There’s so many options for both removable or permanent solutions, and I am obsessed with the fact that I don’t have to put holes in the walls of our brand new home!

We used HANGables® Removable Wall Fasteners for my entire gallery wall in the office, and they worked wonders. The whole process was so simple, quick, and easy. We also used HANGables® Removable hooks to hang up my dreamy paper lights, which I adore.

Overall I absolutely loved not having to get out the hammer and nails, and I’m definitely feeling more encouraged when it comes to decorating the rest of the house now. The directions for HANGables® Removable Wall Fasteners come right on the back of the package, but I swear it’s so intuitive you’ll barely need them. Our dogs also loved napping while we were hanging pictures, instead of getting riled up by all the banging of the hammer and nails!

P.S. Don’t want to get nasty fines at the end of the semester? HANGables® Removable Wall Fasteners are perfect for dorms and apartments too, because they are incredibly easy to remove! I used another brand in college, and I ended up severely damaging my dorm room wall when I couldn’t get the hook to come off.

Get the Right Desk Setup

I’m very much of the train of thought that you don’t need to spend a boatload of money on office decor to make your space both beautiful and original. That being said, the one area you may end up splurging is on your desk and chair.

I used to have a pretty dreadful desk setup. The entire set was incredibly wobbly, so much so that I couldn’t even type on my computer without vibrating the entire desktop down to the floor.

Obviously, due to the quality of that deskspace, I rarely used it. That’s why it was important to me to invest in high quality pieces this time around. I did get a great deal on my desk chair, which was on sale on top of an already competitive price.

Keep an eye out for markdowns, and don’t be afraid to check out something local that might be lightly used. A lot of times you can score high quality, name brand items for half the price or less, simply because someone wants them out of their garage.

Stay Organized Always

One of my biggest struggles when it comes to sitting down and being productive is trying to work in an unorganized space. It’s a complete, debilitating distraction!

Make sure you invest in a desk with storage space if you can, and figure out a plan on how you will stay organized when things get crazy. You’ll want to have a system in place and purchase your organizational items accordingly.
