Out of all the potential skincare woes, blackheads are certainly one of the most frustrating.

Although less noticeable than the massive planet that pops up on your forehead or other trouble spot, blackheads are somewhat illusive when it comes to treating and eliminating them for good.

Though it’s painful, blackhead extraction is one of my favorite parts of getting a facial.

I love the feeling of knowing all my blackheads have been professionally removed, even if achieving it hurts in the moment.

It just feels cleansing, you know?

Luckily though, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on a professional spa treatment (or even leave your house for that matter) to get rid of blackheads for good.

In fact, you probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry for this DIY blackhead mask.

Before we dive into one of my favorite home remedies to get rid of blackheads though, let’s discuss how to prevent blackheads in the first place as well as some of the benefits of this ginger blackhead mask.

How to Prevent Blackheads

In order to figure out how to prevent blackheads, it’s important to look at how blackheads develop in the first place.

While most of us already know what a blackhead looks like, you may not know that blackheads develop due to clogged hair follicles.

Each hair follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that produces oil.

This oil helps to keep your skin soft, but sometimes dead skin cells and oils can collect in the opening to the skin follicle.

If the skin over the bump stays closed, it turns into what we call a whitehead.

If the skin over the bump opens, the exposure to the air causes it to look black and it turns into a blackhead instead.

While there are certain things that are out of our control, such as hormonal changes that can cause skin issues like blackheads, there are still some things you can do to prevent blackheads.

Some of these tips include washing your face regularly, exfoliating, and using oil-free products.

Washing your face regularly and exfoliating will help to keep your skin free of excess oils and hopefully prevent the hair follicles on your face from becoming clogged and turning into whiteheads/blackheads.

Oil-free products can also help prevent blackheads, as you won’t be putting additional oil on your skin that could contribute to or worsen the problem.

Ginger for Blackheads & Ginger Benefits for Skin

Thinking about using ginger for blackheads?

It makes sense, given that there are loads of ginger benefits for skin.

One of the biggest reasons a ginger face mask is considered one of the best home remedies for blackheads is because it has antiseptic properties.

This helps to clean the skin of the bacteria that can cause breakouts.

Ginger is also a powerful antioxidant and helps to stimulate the circulatory system, which helps to maintain a smooth and even complexion.

Last but not least, the ground ginger in this ginger blackhead mask also makes it a natural exfoliator upon removal as well.

In addition to the ginger in this DIY blackhead remover, raw honey also has antibacterial properties and the high pH levels in lemon juice can help reduce inflammation and redness.

So there’s a lot of goodness packed into this simple, three ingredient blackhead mask.

Why Should I Try a DIY Blackhead Remover?

If the above ginger benefits for skin didn’t convince you already, there are plenty of other reasons that I like to opt for natural beauty and at home remedies when it comes to skincare.

If you’re a newbie to making your own products, I find that there are a few major advantages that have encouraged me to experiment with making my own beauty products.

One of these advantages is that I know what ingredients I’m putting on my skin.

There’s no hard to pronounce chemicals or ingredients that I don’t know what they are.

Though store bought products are of course regulated, I still like the assurance that I am choosing exactly what I’m using as a part of my skincare routine.

One of my other favorite reasons to get started with DIY natural beauty products is that it is cheap!

If you’re a beauty lover like me, you probably already know how expensive different serums, creams, face masks, etc. can get.

It seems like something new comes out every other day, always proclaiming to be better than the last item you bought.

While I still love testing out new skincare brands and probably always will, this ginger blackhead mask has really done the trick for me.

So why bother investing in something else, when I can just make a remedy myself?

How to Use an At Home Ginger Blackhead Mask

One of my goals when I create a new DIY beauty recipe is to make sure that it’s easy and requires very few ingredients.

This is because I know how I myself operate when it comes to recipes/DIYs.

If something requires too many ingredients I don’t already own, I’m not going to bother trying it.

Maybe I miss out on some things with that motto, but it’s true!

I don’t want to spend all day hunting down ingredients and making a complex DIY beauty product when I could easily purchase a store bought item.

Lazy? Yes.

But I know there are probably lots of other people out there like me.

So, the good thing about this ginger blackhead mask is that it is extremely easy and only requires three ingredients — ground ginger, raw honey, and lemon.

And the best part?

All you have to do is combine the appropriate measurements of each ingredient in a small bowl and then apply them to your face.

I recommend investing in a few silicone face mask brushes, as I’ve found they make application of both homemade and store bought face masks so much easier and less messy.

I also like these makeup and face mask headbands, which are perfect for keeping your hair back while you’re masking.

This mask does include raw honey, so it’ll be sticky if you accidentally get it in your hair!

In addition to gathering the appropriate ingredients and tools, the other trick to this mask is how you remove it.

Though the three ingredients in this mask are powerful on their own and will work while they’re on your skin, my favorite part about this ginger blackhead mask is its exfoliating properties.

When it comes time to remove the mask, gently scrub it in a circular motion on your skin before washing it off to use the ground ginger as a natural exfoliator.

What was first just a ginger blackhead mask has now just turned into a DIY blackhead scrub!

Nothing beats a dual purpose product, right?

Disclaimer: Before you try any skincare product, store bought or homemade, I ALWAYS recommend doing a patch text on a small section of your skin to make sure you don’t have a reaction (because having a reaction is always a risk you take with new skincare products!). You should also discontinue use of any of the DIY beauty recipes on this site if you experience any redness, irritation, etc.
