Splurge or Save?: Lush’s Mask of Magnaminty

If there’s one beauty product I love, it’s a good face mask. I’m kind of (totally) addicted to the completely renewed complexion that comes after finally washing one off. So, I’ll throw one in my shopping cart on a whim (aka when I’m looking to pamper myself) and have fun with it.

The hard part though? Actually finding a good face mask. I’ve tried a handful of drugstore options and, while I’m never entirely dissatisfied, I always find myself indifferent towards the brand and type of mask. It’s not uncommon that I purchase a whole tube of a mask I’m really excited to try, just to throw it in a bin in my bathroom and never use it again. It’s wasteful, but what can I say? I’m not easily impressed, I guess.

Regardless, I’m not a big spender when it comes to beauty products. So, it was definitely a treat when I unwrapped my gifts from Richard this year. For those of you who don’t follow me in Insta, he got me a ridiculous amount of LUSH products. I love everything that LUSH stands for (no animal testing, handmade products), but I don’t treat myself to their products on a regular basis — or ever really. #brokea$$collegegirl

One of the biggest items in my handpicked LUSH bundle was a huge pot of the “Mask of Magnaminty.” The big pot of this mask can feel like a pretty penny ($25), so I thought I’d share a ‘lil review of my new friend here for any of you who might want to try it out, but aren’t yet convinced it’s worth the price. Also thought this would be a good idea for those of you in the market for a new face mask. Be sure to let me know what you think in the comments if you do check it out!

What I loved:

The smell.

It’s all in the name — the mask smells like mint! Personally I love it, because it has a strong scent without being overpowering. BUT, if you’re not a mint fan, you might want to pass on this one.

The texture.

I love that the mask contains aduki beans for exfoliation. This makes it both a great scrub and mask in one. Two birds with one stone, right?

The convenience.

I love that this mask doesn’t have to be stored in the fridge like some of LUSH’s other mixes. I hate having beauty products hang out in the same place I store food, and these items typically get pushed to the back of my fridge anyways, which is NOT cool, because LUSH products do expire (often times within several months after purchasing).

The duality.

This mask can be used both on your face and back/shoulders to help control breakouts. I particularly love this aspect of the mask, because I had never though of using a mask on my back before. I’ve definitely noticed a decrease in skin irritation back there though since I started using the Mask of Magnaminty.

So soft.

You know how I said I love the feeling after taking off a face mask? Yeah, I’m specifically referencing the feeling after washing off the Mask of Magnaminty. It makes your skin SO soft, which I haven’t really experienced with other masks I’ve tried.

What I loathed:

It feels kind of weird (at first).

The first time I used the mask I was like, “WTF, did I put it on wrong or something? Why is it so cold/tingly?” It’s the china clay and fresh peppermint! It was a strange sensation to have my face feel cold and tingly due to a face mask, but I’ve gotten used to it, and now it doesn’t bother me at all.

It’s (kind of) pricey.

Honestly, I’m a drugstore kind of gal. I use high-end beauty products when I receive them as gifts or purchase them when I have gift cards, but it’s not every day that I’m willing to drop 20+ dollars on a single product that can be duped. However, I’ve found that you’re really getting what you pay for with this mask. I can deal with spending a bit more than normal if it’s on a product that I’m going to use regularly. For me, I love the mask, use it multiple times a week, and will absolutely be purchasing more (for myself, with my own money — ha!) when I run out.

What’s your favorite face mask? Have you ever tried the Mask of Magnaminty or any other LUSH face masks? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
