How to Do Space Buns | Easy Double Buns Tutorial (Products)
Before we jump into this tutorial on how to do space buns, you’ll want to make sure you have the necessary hair products for this look.
While you can get away with using generic products for this tutorial, I’ve found this hairstyle to work best with the following products.
Anti-Residue Shampoo
You of course don’t actually need shampoo for this tutorial, but I always like to mention my favorite anti-residue shampoo in my hair tutorials.
I struggle with thin hair, which is easily weighed down by hair products.
One of the main components of a good hairstyle is of course volume, and that’s impossible to achieve when your hair is saturated with residue from hairspray, dry shampoo, detanglers, etc.
This shampoo seriously saved my life when I was having an issue with greasy hair (even after I’d just washed it, it still looked oily when it dried before I started using this).
If you struggle with thin hair, I would highly recommend finding a good anti-residue shampoo to help you with your overall hair quality and texture.
A Good Hair Brush
One thing you will need for this tutorial is a good hair brush.
You’ll need this throughout your styling in order to part your hair and also to smooth out any bumps.
I swear by this brush, which is the only brush I’ve found that doesn’t completely pull out my hair.

No Crease Hair Ties
No crease hair ties aren’t an absolute essential in this tutorial, but I do highly recommend them (especially if you have thin/fine hair).
I’ve found that no crease hair ties work best when you’re trying to do space buns, because they don’t slip as much as regular hair ties.
There’s nothing more frustrating than perfecting your hairstyle, just to have it already start to fall out minutes later.
Bobby Pins
You’ll also need bobby pins for this style to secure the buns (I like these blonde ones).
Other Products
+ Shine Spray (optional, but I use this to finish off all my styles)
1. Start With Clean, Dry Hair
The first step in how to do space buns is to start with clean, dry hair.
I pre-curled mine, since it gives my hair more volume and I knew the space buns would look better that way when it comes to my texture of hair.
You’ll also want to start this space buns tutorial by parting your hair in the middle (or as close to the middle as you can get it, because I always struggle with this!).
2. Start Your First Space Bun
Start your first space bun by sectioning off hair on one side of your part.
You’ll want to section the top layer of your hair and leave the bottom layer of hair down, since this tutorial is on doing half up half down double buns.
3. Twist The Hair
I like to take my section of hair and twist it, before securing it with a no crease hair tie.
4. Secure With a Hair Tie
Next, secure that section of hair with a hair tie (again, I find that no crease hair ties work best for keeping the buns stable and preventing slippage).
5. Wrap the Hair & Secure With Bobby Pins
Next, wrap the ponytail around the hair tie.
You’ll want to wrap the hair relatively tightly, and secure it in multiple spots with bobby pins until the bun feels secure.
6. Adjust the Bun
The last major step of how to do space buns is probably the hardest.
This is the part where you adjust the bun you just made, gently pulling it at the sides until it looks exactly how you want it.
You can see that my space buns aren’t quite as huge and fluffy as other people’s, but if you have thick and/or long hair you can definitely pull the buns and manipulate them much easier.

7. Repeat On the Other Side
Next, you’ll repeat these steps on the other side of your part to achieve your double buns.
8. Finish Off With Hairspray
Once you’re happy with the way your space buns look, you can finish the style by lightly misting the buns with hair spray to secure them even further.
I also like to finish all of my hairstyles with this shine spray as well.
Overall, learning how to do space buns isn’t actually that hard.
There are so many cool variations you can do with this hairstyle as well, like adding glitter, temporary hair dye, and more.
Or, you can keep things simple for a fun everyday look.
The possibilities really are endless, and I hope you found this tutorial helpful!
