Thank you to adidas for sponsoring today’s post on how to stay healthy while traveling! As always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
2018 was an exciting year for many reasons, but one of my favorite parts was the fact that we started traveling more. I loved getting the chance to see places in the U.S. that I’d never been to before (I’m looking at you, Boston), and I’m excited to further expand upon our plans this year.
That being said, one of the hardest parts about being on the go for me has been the struggle to stay healthy while traveling.
Though R. and I are generally pretty active travelers, you know if you’ve read any of my travel guides that we LOVE good local cuisine.
We’re foodies, what can we say?
Following other travel bloggers, I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. Food is a huge part of experiencing a destination, and it can easily take a toll on your health if you’re not careful (speaking from personal experience here!).
That’s why today I want to share with you some of my best tips that I’ve learned over the past year that I hope will help you stay healthy while traveling, too.

How to Stay Healthy While Traveling
Drink Plenty of Water
One of the things that I think is easiest to forget when you’re trying to stay healthy while traveling is the need to remain hydrated.
Our days are often jam packed with activities — especially during weekend trips. We’re running around trying to see as much as we can, so I try to remember to always bring a reusable water bottle.
This is such a simple fix that’s great for your health. Not to mention, it can often prevent you from overeating too. Try drinking a glass or two of water before a big meal, or if you’re still feeling hungry after.
I guarantee you’ll still be able to enjoy your meal, without totally pigging out!
Pack Healthy Snacks While Traveling
We took a number of road trips in 2018, and one thing that really helped us to stay healthy while traveling was packing healthy snacks.
There’s no sense in having to eat low-quality fast food if you don’t have to. Hold out for the authentic local cuisine!
Stay Active (Walk!)
When we went on a girls’ trip in December to New York City, eating clean just wasn’t in the cards — ha!
Seriously, just check out our mega milkshakes in this post. Drool.
I didn’t even feel sorry about it though, because we walked almost everywhere we went! My legs were so sore each night, and I was happy that I was able to get some good exercise while exploring the city.
I’d totally recommend walking as your mode of transport whenever you can. It’s such an easy way to stay healthy while traveling.
Just make sure you pack the right clothing if you’re going to be walking around all day!
Some of my favorite pieces right now are my adidas slip-ons, tights, and lavender crop top.
Ditch Social Media
Staying healthy isn’t just about eating clean and working out (shocking, right?). Sometimes it’s about protecting and nourishing your mental health, too.
Though social media is very much a part of my job (especially when I’m on press trips), I try to stay off of it as much as I can.
I want to experience a destination, not live through other people via Instagram.
Challenge yourself to take a digital detox every once in awhile. You might be surprised at how good it feels.
Get Enough Sleep
In addition to eating healthy while traveling, I also have a hard time with getting enough sleep. After all, I want to see and do everything I can!
That being said, I’ve learned the importance of getting a full eight hours of sleep each night, even when I’m on the road. While I’ve had some really fun times staying out late, it’s not always worth it the next morning.
Don’t Overdo It
Last but not least, don’t overdo it. Sometimes, plans just don’t work out. Rich and I are pretty busy travelers, but we take it easy when we need to.
Trust your gut (and your body), and know when it’s time to take a break.
