5 Summer Lip Colors and Makeup Ideas For Every Budget

Does anyone else feel like summer deserves her own category, separate from all the other seasons? (Not sure why I’m personifying summer as a female, but it feels right…)

I love summer. LOVE it. It’s always fun for me to dig out my high waisted shorts, bright tanks and flowy dresses that have been momentarily forgotten about and move them front and center in my closet. BTW, I absolutely believe rearranging your wardrobe is necessary each season, especially if you have a small closet like me (sigh). But, that post is for another day…

Anyways, there’s something special about the season that warrants a change in routine. Slow things down a little but also spice it up? Anyone else with me?

And like I said, I love bringing out bright colors and even a few crazy prints this time of year. But that’s obvious, right?…

So let’s talk about summer makeup ideas instead.

As afraid as I am of big changes, I’m obsessed with the little nuances that come with choosing a new lip color or shade of blush. Weird? Maybe. But trust me when I tell you that the key to summer makeup absolutely differs from that of the other three seasons. It just does

I think we can all agree that summer has a distinct vibe. So why not switch up the good old makeup routine to reflect what the season has to offer? I’m a sucker for a colorful lip, and I think it’s one of the easiest ways to capture fun summer vibes, so I’m sharing five of my favorite shades for the summer below AND how/when to rock ’em.

Also, don’t forget to grab the freebie at the bottom of this post where I’m sharing all of my secrets to flawless summer makeup!

1. Yves saint laurent rouge pur couture “fuschia pink” $35

One of the best parts about summer is the abundant opportunities for little pops of color. I adore this YSL shade because, to me, it screams confidence. When I first got it, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to rock it…but now I can’t get enough (and you guys know how much I love hot pink if you’ve read this post)! If you’re hesitant about opting for such a bold lip, keep the rest of the look simple. Think white, maybe lacy, something feminine. There’s no need to go overboard.

Where/When to Wear: During the day! Pair with a pretty floral, or keep it simple in all white. Just check out the weather and make sure it won’t rain, as this shade works best on beautiful, sunny days, when it can reflect the lovely colors outside. It can look a little bit “much” if you’re caught in a thunderstorm!

2. Revlon super lustrous lipstick “raspberry freeze” <$10

Don’t hate me, but this exact shade is discontinued. And why am I taunting you? First of all, I really like Revlon lipstick. I’ve boughten tons of shades just due to the sheer convenience of picking them up at the drugstore and the fact that they’re so reasonably priced. I also found the exact color here, if you’re dead set on this shade. They also have some other options that are great choices to put a little color into your everyday look!

Where/When to Wear: Anytime! Opt for “Raspberry Freeze” or a similar shade for your everyday look. It’s great for the office, because it adds a pop of color, without being too over the top.

3. tarte amazonian butter lipstick “poppy” $17

This coral-esque shade is perfect for summer. It’s bright, but not too bright, ya know? It also applies very nicely (not too thick, slimy, or moveable) and even has a refreshing mint scent to it!

Where/When to Wear: I like to pair this shade with other red/pinks and florals. It’s also perfect for a fun backyard BBQ or other event, and it’s definitely worth picking up for Memorial Day weekend!

4. burt’s bees “magenta rush” $8.99

After seeing an ad for the new Burt’s Bees lipsticks a few months ago, I knew I had to try it. I love this bright pink color, which feels perfect for the warm weather.

Where/When to Wear: I like this shade any time of day, as long as it’s paired with some bright and fun colors!

5. e.l.f. moisturizing lipstick “marsala blush” $3

If you want a bang for your buck, this is it. And honestly, out of all of these picks, this lip color is my favorite. It’s matte, and it literally does not move once you put it on (so it’s totally safe to put on before you eat). I couldn’t find the link for this exact shade, but I’d recommend any color of this line just because it’s so mess-free and moisturizing.

Where/When to Where: I throw this shade on any time that I know I have a busy day ahead of me, where I won’t be able to reapply any makeup. It’s also a great option for when the weather gets really humid, because it’s so mess free!
