How to Stay Organized in College

For those of you who don’t know, I started college again at the end of last month. I’ve been dying to see my friends and get back into the swing of things, BUT these first few weeks have been insane. Insane as in wanna laugh, cry, eat cookies and lay into a punching bag all at the same time kind of insane. Though it’s both elating and inspiring to be taking part in some (5+) great career-prep organizations while also running a student media outlet, volunteering at the local animal shelter and getting pumped for another season on the equestrian team (while also starting the process of revamping their website), needless to say, I’ve been a little on edge.

That, my loves, is where a trusty planner comes in.

Organization has always been extremely important to me. I’m totally guilty of micromanaging, but I know how to get things done. However, just because I’m obsessed with organization doesn’t mean I’ve been particularly good at it in the past.

To give you guys a clearer picture: I used to (and still kind of do) keep my entire schedule on my phone…in the form of alarms…I know, I know — just use the calendar app, right? I once missed a meeting when my calendar notification failed to go off, and I just can’t take that chance again! *insert neurotic emoji here*

On a serious note though, my life can get suuuuper stressful, just like anyone else’s. So, you can imagine my delight when me & my BIG ideas sent me their esteemed Happy Planner. You would’ve thought I was on a sugar high if you’d seen me after I opened the package — pure happiness and just a bit (a lot though, really) of excitement.

For those of you who have been living under an organizational rock, I’ll fill you in real quick. Here’s the lowdown on The Happy Planner:

  • It’s an 18 month planner
  • It’s disc bound, so you can add more pages!
  • There’s lots of inspirational design elements (yay!)
  • Planning pages feature both monthly and weekly views
  • There’s SO much additional content that’s tailored to the planner (such as perfectly sized sticky notes and quote stickers) that makes it a really fun and creative experience!

Now if we’re being honest here, I’ve never actually had a nice planner before. Sure, I’ve used them in the past, but mainly just to keep track of schoolwork. Now I’m in the process of transitioning all of my silly little phone alarms and notifications (aka my ENTIRE LIFE) onto paper, in my planner. That means that every appointment, every meeting every assignment is going into my little black and gold book. And let me tell you, it is such a relief.

Call me crazy but, I find writing down my to-do lists extremely therapeutic. Is that weird? Probably, but it’s true. Just putting it all on paper helps me to know that I’m not going to forget anything, and that everything will eventually get done. I’ve found that one of the best ways to get the bang for your buck when it comes to planners is to truly use it. Maybe you think there’s no way you’ll forget about that meeting or assignment, but trust me, the time will come.

So, I have some pretty high hopes for my new planner (aka new [organized] life, haha). Not only am I already feeling less stressed, but I’m super excited about actually penciling in time to work on the blog. My schedule was so out of whack in August, but I’m finally getting back on track!

Oh, and here’s a little sneak peek at The Happy Planner in action:
