I don’t know about the rest of you, but I sure as hell have trouble staying on track this time of the year. My house is already bustling with holiday excitement, which brings with it stress and high calorie, bikini busting anti-diets. There’s a million things to think about and twice as many distractions, so I thought I’d share some tips and tricks I use to stay motivated:
The holiday craze can leave you feeling like you have a bazillion things to do, with not enough hours in the day. Trust me when I tell you, your stress levels will plummet once you have a hold on what you actually need to get done. Make to-do lists, but don’t overwhelm yourself. Keep the items to a maximum of five realistic goals for each day. This stress reduction will curb your urges to binge and the time you gain from prioritizing your activities will leave you with more free time to hit the gym.
WRITE IT OUT
Journals are not just for lovesick tweens. Keep track of your short term and long term goals, accomplishments and future rewards. This is a surefire way to keep you going as you map out your plans and visualize your success.
PIN, TUMBLE, GRAM
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that spending all day surfing social media is a good idea. According to the Huffington Post, social media users are actually 14% more likely to report that their lives are somewhat stressful. This is partially due to the lack of privacy that comes with social media and the increased pressure to keep up with current trends. However, platforms such as Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram can prove motivational. Try searching “fitspo” or “clean eating” for some fresh ideas and inspiring pics to keep you on track. You may even consider creating an inspiration board so you can revisit the images you find most inspiring.
SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP
I’m all about a little retail therapy and, with the holidays right around the corner, you have all the reason to splurge on a cute cocktail dress for New Years Eve. Now think of how amaze you’ll look, especially if you continue to sculpt that ‘bod with pilates throughout the holiday season.
DO IT TOGETHER
Make a pact with your best girlfriends to help each other get through the “holidaze”. Set aside a few weeknights where you all agree to do a yoga class or go for a run together.
Schedules too busy? Create a group chat in iMessage or on Facebook and have everyone post updates after her workout. You can even plan an all-girls wine and movie night to celebrate your accomplishments post holiday season.
Smile. Laugh. Enjoy the season. Accept that you’re going to consume delicacies that are not a part of your regular diet, but know how to monitor your intake and control your portions. View exercise as a privilege and an escape from the busyness of day to day activities.
I hope you all can relate and find a few of these tricks helpful! What else keeps you motivated to stay fit throughout the holiday season?
