After being in a relationship for 3+ years (yay!), I’d like to think that I’ve got the whole date night thing down to a science. BUT, even with the many dates that Richard and I have been on together, there have been a few blips that have kind of ruined some of the plans. For example, when we celebrated two years of being together, I felt so sick to my stomach that we had to leave the restaurant before we could even order anything! And this year Richard had a migraine, so we ended up driving around for what seemed like forever just to find the kind of medication we were looking for. UGH.

Richard also recently gave me a jar with a bunch of colored popsicle sticks in it. Together we’re going to write down a bunch of different date ideas, so that the next time we’re bored we can just pick an activity from the jar! Needless to say, date night won’t be going away in my life anytime soon.

So, last weekend I headed over to Walmart for a few essentials. Here’s some of the things I picked up, plus a few other items you won’t want to forget the next time you go out:

1. ChapStick

My roommates and I always joke about having “ChapStick emergencies.” A few of us have even gone out of our way while we’re out just to get some (even though we have about 20 at home), because the situation is that dire. I like ChapStick Total Hydration because it’s 100% natural. That’s important to me. I’ll swipe a bit of this formula (which includes an advanced nourishing formula with argan oil and avocado butter and rosehip oils, BTW) on over my lipstick to moisturize right before I’m going out on a date. I’ll also pack it in my purse in case I need it again while I’m out.

2. Advil

I’ve learned the hard way that Advil is a must-have when it comes to both date night and everyday purse essentials. You never know when you’ll need it (aka when you’re celebrating your three year, cough cough), and nothing’s faster on tough pain (among OTC pain relievers) than Advil. I carry a small bottle of the Advil Liquid Gels, which fit easily inside my purse for whenever I (or someone else) might need it.

3. Blotting Papers

Blotting papers…an item that goes forgotten in almost any girl’s bag, yet is SO essential. I can’t stress enough how handy they’ve been for me in the past, and I certainly won’t leave the house for a date without them. Nobody wants to look greasy on a date! I usually don’t buy any specific brand, because they’re mostly all the same to me, but they’re still a definite must-have.

4. Cash

This is another one where you just don’t know when you’re going to need it. I’m notorious for only bringing my card wherever I go, which has gotten me into trouble in the past when I’ve needed to pay someone back or tip the waiter. Richard will also tell you that I’m known for “forgetting” to bring any form of payment whatsoever. I say I do really forget, but he thinks I only do this to make sure he picks up the tab! Either way, it’s always a good idea to bring some cash on a date, just in case.

5. Gum/Mints

Nobody wants to pass up a killer meal just because of the fear of bad breath. Enjoy the date sans bland food by packing your favorite gum/mints. Your date will also appreciate if you share!

6. Roll-On Perfume

It’s not a total necessity, but it’s a confidence booster — so why not? I love stashing a small vial of roll-on scent in my purse for when I feel like freshening up. Then I come back to the table/theater/wherever feeling like $1,000,000!

7. Nexium 24HR

Nothing ruins a meal like heartburn, so I got a little bottle of Nexium 24HR to keep in my purse specifically for dinner dates. It’s the #1 prescribed acid blocker brand (based on IMS health data: total Nexium prescriptions 2006-2014), so there’ll be no anxiety over indulging in that heavy Italian meal. Richard and I go out with my parents a lot, who often complain of heartburn & are total foodies, so they’re sure to appreciate this little purchase.
